America Ferrera is back on the red carpet and the real-world Barbie did successfully turn a lot of heads. Clad in a shimmering pink corset gown, the actress stopped for a short interview with The Hollywood reporter. When asked who are her award season BFFs this year, Ferrera took the Oppenheimer actress Emily Blunt’s name along with, Danielle Brooks, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Lily Gladstone. 

Barbie made history by becoming the top-earning live-action movie globally under a female director. It became Warner Bros.’s most successful global release to date. The acclaim for her portrayal of Gloria, a real-world Mattel employee in Barbie, and her impactful monologue on the struggles of womanhood, led Ferrera to run for the Best Supporting Actress category. Unfortunately, she lost it to one of her BFFs, Da’Vine Joy Randolph. While Ferrera appeared in a Barbie-esque outfit, Margot Robbie ditched pink on the red carpet.

Robbie chose a strapless black Versace dress, which many are claiming to be a “protest dress” for her Academy snub. Especially because from the start of her Barbie promotional tour on June 25, last year, where she wore a pink and white polka-dot Valentino mini dress with a crisscross neckline Robbie and her stylist Andrew Mukamal have been dedicated to presenting new Barbie-inspired looks for each outing. Despite some heartbreaking snubs for Barbie, the Oscars did not downplay the importance of the 2023 blockbuster. 

The Academy celebrated Barbie since the Greta Gerwig movie played a major role in elevating the event’s shine. 

Why is Barbie important to the Oscars?

‘Barbenheimer’ was a natural marvel, but it blossomed into one due to the robust backing and extensive promotion. Warner Bros’ entire agenda for the year revolved around Barbie Summer. There is an unsaid fact that the Academy’s preferences often align more with mainstream tastes than those of the internet at large, and Barbie fits the bill as the kind of blockbuster they would eagerly embrace. 

It was well understood that the film would play a major role in the show, with multiple original songs set to be performed live and several cast members scheduled to present. It is also clear that, in certain regards, the Academy favored Barbie even more than other voting bodies. Nevertheless, as per past trends, the Academy is often reluctant to bestow the Best Picture award on the highest-earning film of the year, which did put Barbie at the bottom of the list in terms of chances of winning.
