The 2024 Oscar nominations have kick-started the frenzy and hype surrounding two of last year’s biggest movies – Oppenheimer and Barbie. Interestingly, the nods began with the Christopher Nolan flick getting the upper hand on the Greta Gewrig directorial. Emily Blunt received the first nod with Best Supporting Actress, followed by Robert Downey Jr. earning a Best Supporting Actor one, taking the J. Robert Oppenheimer biopic’s tally to two in the blink of an eye.

At the same time, Barbie opened its account with one as Ryan Gosling bagged the first nod for Best Supporting Actor, with America Ferrera earning another for Best Supporting Actress. However, Oppenheimer marched ahead with an additional nod for Best Music (Original Score), upping its tally ahead of Barbie. Interestingly, even though Gosling’s song – ‘I’m Just Ken’ won a Best Original Song nod, the actor will have to refrain from sharing the credits.

By the end of the announcements, the picture distilled itself even more clearly with the gap between the two taking a massive leap. Oppenheimer led the Oscar 2024 nominations with thirteen nods, and Barbie came at a distant eight in total. Additionally, Poor Things and Killers of the Flower Moon also managed to pull ahead of the Greta Gerwig flick with eleven and ten nods, respectively.

Christopher Nolan also upped his chances of earning his first-ever Oscar with a Best Director nomination. Moreover, his movie also secured to compete in some of the biggest categories, including Best Picture, adding more feathers to the cap of one of the highest-grossing R-rated movies.

In the meantime, several surprises also pulled into the mix, with Nolan unsurprisingly losing out on one key nod despite a strong show.

Barbie receives two big snubs even as Oppenheimer loses one key nomination

In a far cry from its 2024 Golden Globe wins, Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie lost out on the Best Director and Best Actress 2024 Oscar nominations, respectively, for Barbie. The summer flick which had turned itself into a phenomenon alongside Oppenheimer rode largely on Gerwig’s mastermind. Pitching the Mattel doll as a fourth-wall-breaking voice for women all over, the flick did, however, enter its way for the Best Picture race.

Unsurprisingly, Christopher Nolan and Oppenheimer missed out on the Best Visual Effects category. This prediction of a snub had come long before because of the very nature of the flick’s billing. Regardless, in its place, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 came as an entrant alongside Godzilla: Minus One, Napoleon, The Creator, and Mission Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One.
