Once Rejected by Ryan Reynolds’ ‘Deadpool’ How John Cena Found a Place in ‘Barbie’ Thanks to Margot Robbie

Hollywood, despite possessing a wide plethora of stars, often tends to opt for a narrow point of view, leading to the stereotyping of numerous talents. While some of them play a trick or two with Stockholm syndrome and specialize in the stereotypes they are trapped in, others go above and beyond to break through it. One among them is the WWE wrestler-turned-actor, John Cena, who is now also Barbie certified.

After years of being typecast as the muscle junkie, John Cena joined the pink-perfect cast of Barbie as a merman. While one would assume it was the work of Greta Gerwig’s mastermind, Cena revealed that it took the willingness to do “anything” from his side and a chance encounter with Margot Robbie that got him his iconic tail.

The casting provided soft padding for the former wrestler, who had faced rejection at several big productions, including Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool. Fortunately for him, Fast X was filming right across the street from Barbie.

John Cena saw a very obvious parallel between the roaring engines of Fast X and the blinding heels of Barbie with its grand cast and larger-than-life production. The Fast X  actor revealed to Hoda Kotb on her show that he told Margot Robbie, “I will pretty much do whatever you guys need.”

Robbie and the makers took “whatever” a tad bit too seriously as they turned a 13 times WWE champion into a merman. But while John Cena was happy with whatever role he had, Margot Robbie must have been happier to work with him again.

James Gunn brought Margot Robbie and John Cena together for The Suicide Squad. It was during the movie that the two seem to have formed a commendable companionship. If Robbie’s confessions about sleeping with his cutout are anything to go by, then a little too commendable. But after working with him on The Suicide Squad, the actress was sure that he was meant for grand things.

She was among his loudest cheerleaders as he tried his foot or tail on something entirely new. Fans cannot wait to see them together again, be it in an action extravaganza or a philosophical parade.
