Once “Protected” by SAG-AFTRA, Now Duchess Meghan Markle Is Still Mute on Strike
Meghan Markle broke a routine spanning years when she finally put her foot down and decided to resign as a senior royal member. However, she is not the first to express her frustration about the family and media scrutiny. The most popular example is the Duchess’ mother-in-law, Princess Diana, herself. However, there is a vast difference between Princess Diana’s interview with BBC and that of Meghan Markle with Oprah Winfrey.
While both the former senior royal members highlighted how the family harbored a stigma around mental health, all the while campaigning for it, Meghan Markle came from a union that had “protected” her. Owing to her contribution to television, the Duchess had become a part of the SAG union. In her Oprah Winfrey interview, she revealed how she used the union and how it “protected” her as an example to wake the Palace’s HR into action. Albeit, to no avail.
At that time, Markle had made clear that she will not be returning to acting. But although Markle drew the curtains herself, as the Palace turned its back on her, the SAG union was kind enough to still extend a helping hand.

“We are still here for you, Meghan,” SAG-AFTRA tweeted after the Duchess’ Oprah Winfrey interview. It has been two years and a blockbuster docuseries since then.
Now it is the SAG-AFTRA that is in need of support as it strikes against the extensive use of AI and wage issues and it is Markle’s chance to do the protection.

The SAG-AFTRA strike has enveloped the entirety of Hollywood. And Meghan Markle, who lives in a Montecito mansion worth $40 million, must be aware of it, especially since she did not forget how her previous union “protected” her even inside the palace. But the memory of it has not pushed the Duchess of Sussex out to strike with her former colleagues.
It is understandable that the Californian royal does not identify as a member of the union anymore since she quit acting. But neither was she a part of the SAG-AFTRA when it supported her after the Oprah interview. Whether Meghan Markle will choose to take a stand with SAG-AFTRA or not will speak volumes about her loyalty.
