"Not surprised at all"- Dafne Keen’s ‘The Acolyte’ Gets the Boot, Leaving Fans All but Content
It was in 2012 that Disney took the reins of the Star Wars franchise to continue the legacy of George Lucas. But instead, the entertainment conglomerate threw out Lucas's original storyline of the saga and made up their own. This has led many fans to accuse Disney of ruining the epic space opera media franchise, Star Wars, and their latest release, The Acolyte, proves it. With a dismal 18% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Star Wars: The Acolyte, starring Dafne Keen, has become the franchise's most problematic project to date.
The Acolyte received criticism for its simplistic writing, lore inconsistencies, and stiff acting. So much so that, after just one season, Lucasfilm has decided not to proceed with a second season, according to a report from Deadline. The show had a strong start when it premiered with two episodes, even securing the biggest series debut on Disney+ this year. However, the show struggled to maintain its momentum. The Acolyte, which made its debut on Nielsen’s Top 10 Originals chart, quickly dropped out of the list altogether shortly after.

Creator Leslye Headland, however, had hoped for a second installment of The Acolyte and even pitched her ideas for it. But the Ki-Adi-Mundi controversy, along with the show's other bold choices and divergence from other Star Wars stories, only fueled fan frustration and hurt the show overall. Therefore, it is no surprise that fans are unfazed now that the 2024 show got canceled after just one season.
Fans have taken to X to express relief over The Acolyte's cancellation as if they already saw it coming.
Fans are happy to see The Acolyte wrapping up
A victim of review-bombing, The Acolyte’s creator, Leslye Headland, was accused of making the show too ‘woke.’ However, despite the criticism of the changes, some viewers appreciated how the show challenged the traditional perception of the Jedi as infallible and wholly virtuous. Still, it could not generate enough support for a second season, and fans are "not surprised at all" by Lucasfilm’s decision.
Some fans, however, were hoping for The Acolyte to continue beyond the first season and were disappointed by the news.

While there are hopes of seeing big stars debuting in the Star Wars franchise, this might be the last of the High Republic era in live-action. Next up, fans can look forward to the Disney+ series Skeleton Crew in December, Andor season 2 in 2025, and The Mandalorian with Grogu in 2026. Until then, Disney can bask in the glory of its now billion-dollar franchise, Deadpool & Wolverine.
