Not Just Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, Here Are 5 Acting Pairs Who Didn’t Hear Director Call "cut" During Filming
It is no secret that most celebrities hate intimacy on screen. From striking awkward poses to revealing their vulnerabilities in front of a whole crew, a lot goes into making these scenes happen that they are anything but- and comfort is rarely part of the equation. Sometimes, despite all the precautions taken, actors find themselves caught in some truly awkward and cringeworthy moments. Recently, something similar was shared about We Live in Time co-stars Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh. But they are definitely not alone in this boat.
Here are five pairs of actors who have found themselves in the same pickle while filming their love scenes.
Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton

Bridgerton never fails to invite a few complaints from pearl-clutching suburban moms, especially when it comes to its love-making scenes. And the third season, featuring Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton, certainly had its share of wild moments. In a candid chat with Access Hollywood, the lead actors opened up about the much-discussed carriage scene, revealing that they got so wrapped up in the moment while filming a steamy intimate scene that they truly lost track.
They had to keep the on-screen chemistry flowing for longer than expected, as they did not hear anyone call “cut" which in hind sight did more damage to a certain furniture than it did to the scene that won the Internet.
This led director Andrew Ahn to stroll over to the carriage to see what was really happening inside.
Christian Bale and Ewan McGregor
Christian Bale and Ewan McGregor teamed up for the 1998 film, Velvet Goldmine. During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, McGregor shared an embarrassing story about him and his co-star during the filming. It turns out that while filming one of the steamy scenes, he and Bale became so engrossed in their performance that they did not hear the director call “cut”.
The pair continued with the act as if nothing had happened. “They must have gone ‘cut’ really quietly,” Ewan McGregor said while explaining how lost they got in the moment.
Amber Heard and Johnny Depp
During the sensational court case between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp, the actress opened up about the time she and her ex-partner lost sight of their professional boundaries. While filming The Rum Diary, Heard revealed that the co-stars got a little carried away during their on-screen kiss, which felt incredibly “real” because Depp “used his tongue,” as she put it. Heard admitted to feeling nervous, especially since both she and Mr. Depp were involved with other people at the time.
Heard testified that the romantic shower scene blurred the lines of professionalism, as Depp pulled her in for a passionate kiss, grabbed her face, and turned up the heat in an unexpected way.
Greta Garbo and John Gilbert
Getting carried away is definitely not just a modern-day problem. Greta Garbo and John Gilbert shared an iconic kiss in the silent romantic drama Flesh and The Devil back in 1926. Reflecting on that moment, director Clarence Brown once remarked that during their first love scene, “Nobody else was even there. Those two were alone in a world of their own”.
In this case, they had the director so caught up in the magic that he chose not to call “cut,” feeling it would be an “intrusion.” Instead, Brown would simply allow the moment to unfold uninterrupted and motion for the crew to move to another part of the set and let the actors finish.

Last but definitely not least, we have Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, who were the ones to have recently sparked the conversation about actors getting lost in their love scenes in the first place. During a recent event at New York City’s 92nd Street Y, the Spider-Man star reminisced about a particularly awkward moment while filming a “very intimate" scene with his We Live in Time co-star, Florence Pugh.
Garfield recounted how it all unfolded during their very first take, shot on a closed set with just the two of them, the camera operator, and the boom operator. "we get into it, as it were, and we go a little further than we were meant to just because we never heard "cut", confessed Garfield. Nonetheless, hopefully their awkward experience will translate into something truly heart-fluttering on screen.
