Serial killer stories have become a dependable way to grab attention in the streaming era. Whether the narrative follows the investigators racing to catch a predator or the killer himself on a spree, the formula keeps pulling in audiences and keeping them glued to the screen. Apple TV+ is leaning into that appetite with Nocturne, its latest entry in the crime-thriller space.

From what the series is about to what makes it stand out, here is everything to know about Nocturne.

Nocturne follows Jonah Lynn as he moves to a small town in search of a quiet life, only to be met with the exact opposite when the notorious serial killer Jurek Walter comes into play. With Walter always a step ahead when it comes to cunning, Jonah is left fighting tooth and nail to protect those he holds close.

Making matters worse, his protégé and surrogate daughter, FBI Agent Saga Bauer, goes undercover to get answers from the killer himself. Based on Lars Kepler’s novels Lazarus and The Sandman, the series is a dream come true for fans of mystery and thriller. Nocturne draws on a hugely popular source. Lars Kepler is the pen name of husband-and-wife writing duo Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril and Alexander Ahndoril, whose crime novels have sold over 20 million copies worldwide.

But a gripping story is only half the draw, as the cast is just as compelling.

A story like Nocturne demands more than just adrenaline. The cat-and-mouse chase between a seasoned detective and a cunning killer calls for performers who can carry intense action, while the personal stakes require real emotional depth. Apple TV appears to have understood the assignment, cherry-picking a cast built to deliver both.

Liev Schreiber, an Emmy and Golden Globe nominee, headlines as Jonah Lynn, with Emmy nominee Zazie Beetz, best known for playing Domino in Deadpool 2, as FBI Agent Saga Bauer. Stephen Graham, an Emmy, Golden Globe, and Actor Award winner best known for Adolescence, plays the chilling Jurek Walter. Bill Camp, Rory Culkin, Chrissy Metz, Poorna Jagannathan, and Gary Carr round out the ensemble.

Behind the camera, the series is just as well stacked. Rowan Joffe, the BAFTA-winning creator behind Tin Star, created the show for television and also writes and executive produces. John Hlavin, known for Shooter and The Man Who Fell to Earth, serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Emmy winner Tim Van Patten, whose credits include Franklin and Masters of the Air, directs the first two episodes. Schreiber and Beetz also executive produce.

With a cast and story this strong, the next question is when and where to catch it.

Nocturne had a blockbuster red carpet premiere on October 20 at Regal Union Square in New York City, where the stars of the series turned up dressed to the nines. Zazie Beetz in particular stole the show, debuting her baby bump alongside her husband, David Rysdahl, who is also an executive producer on the series. With the buzz building, the show is all set to release on October 30. Nocturne streams globally on Apple TV, with production handled by A+E Studios in association with Range Studios.

Viewers should not expect to binge the whole season in one sitting, as not all episodes will drop at once. The series has ten episodes in total, and the first two premiere on Friday, October 30, though they will be accessible to US viewers on Thursday night, October 29, at 9:00 p.m. ET due to standard Apple TV release timing. From there, one new episode will drop every Friday, building toward the finale on December 25.
