Set to turn the box office into her personal victory lap with the upcoming release of Joker: Folie à Deux, Lady Gaga has plans to give the year a fitting cinematic end. While this is officially the season for musical magic to hit theaters, most artists generating early Oscar whispers have already shown off their acting skills with Gaga being no exception. One of her last standout roles was in the House of Gucci, but her confidence for the forthcoming is tenfold, especially because she did not need a psychiatric nurse on speed dial this time around.

While Gaga already had fans on edge, this unique filming experience says a ton about her confidence in what she is ready to deliver to her fans.

Lady Gaga walked the red carpet in the City of Angels for the Joker: Folie à Deux premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre, looking fierce with her fiery red hair in an all-black ensemble accompanying her co-star Joaquin Phoenix. As the pop icon faced a media whirlwind, Variety could not resist popping the question of whether she needed psychiatric nurse support on set for this film like she did for House of Gucci.

Gaga quickly shot that down, giving a shout-out to her amazing team instead. “I was there with my wonderful team”, Gaga reflected, raving about her close collaboration with Todd Phillips and Phoenix on the project. For her, filming the musical sequel to Joker was a totally unique experience—nothing like the journey she took for House of Gucci. But even so, not many know about this little detail that went behind the scenes.

Lady Gaga sat down with Variety in December 2021 to reveal about seeking on-set help from a mental health professional during the final days of shooting the House of Gucci. “I sort of felt like I had to. I felt that it was safer for me,” she said, but quickly clarified that her story is not about glorifying her commitment to acting. Instead, Gaga reflected that no artist should push themselves to the brink where it gets that intense.

While she did not have a solid answer for why she feels this way, she mentioned having developed a “romantic relationship with suffering for your art” while growing up. Even though her connection to this project was super strong—so much so that it inspired her to release a soundtrack album she will not call her studio album—it is refreshing to see how she has gone from pushing herself to the extreme for her art to finding a more comfortable balance.
