It goes without saying, that Deadpool & Wolverine featured some shocking cameos. And one of the best among them was Henry Cavill as a Wolverine variant, aka the Cavillerine. Although it is known that Cavill might never really get the chance to show his full potential as the Man of Steel, the Wolverine cameo reignited some hopes of seeing him don another superhero gear after his heartbreaking Superman exit. However, for him to step into the MCU franchise as Wolverine, Hugh Jackman would have to hang up his claws.

Unless the franchise plans on keeping both variants in play, this new update has further reduced Cavill’s chances of being in the MCU.

Henry Cavill’s Deadpool & Wolverine cameo had fans dreaming about having the British actor and Marvel make their wishes come true, again. However, Hollywood insider MyTimeToShineHello recently revealed that Hugh Jackman is eager to keep his claws out as Wolverine, even after Secret Wars. It looks like they were not kidding when they joked about dragging Jackman’s character into his 90s. “Hugh Jackman wants to stick around and make more movies with Ryan Reynolds,” said the insider.

This is hardly surprising, given the fun Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman had on set. However, this casts doubt over Henry Cavill’s run in the MCU as Wolverine. With the Wolverine role still firmly in Jackman’s hands, Cavill’s cameo might have been nothing more than a nod to his superhero past. And even if Jackman decides to hang up his claws, there is already a worthy Wolverine variant available.

According to fans, this Wolverine variant is the most fitting candidate for Jackman to pass the torch to.

There were two main Wolverine variants in Deadpool & Wolverine. One was Hugh Jackman’s, and the other was Dafne Keen as X-23. According to a popular theory by Austin Medeiros, Marvel Studios is not about to swap out Hugh Jackman as Logan or Wolverine. Instead, they are likely to let Dafne Keen pick up the mantle as X-23 in the MCU. This means X-23 could become the new Wolverine for the next X-Men team- provided, of course, that the rumored MCU reboot goes ahead after Avengers: Secret Wars.

That said, even though Jackman still seems eager to play Wolverine, it is not out of the question that Henry Cavill will return. The Witcher actor might return for another cameo, possibly alongside the OG Wolverine. The mystery surrounding this should be unveiled with the release of the next two Avengers films.
