Stranger Things has a loyal fanbase and fans are eagerly looking up to the final season 5 of the show. And it is mostly the characters that have carved their way into fans’ hearts. One such character was Lucas Sinclair, played by Caleb McLaughlin, who was the epitome of loyalty to his friends but sometimes, and just sometimes, appeared to be rude and narrow-minded. While fans have to wait for McLaughlin’s return as Sinclair because of the Writer’s Guild of America’s (WGA) strike, the young actor has a new movie on the way, which in general is not pleasing the fans.

Stranger Things star Caleb McLaughlin is all set to star in Shooting Stars, a movie on LeBron James and his friends reaching the top of their school basketball team and his subsequent NBA and Olympics winnings. Set in the 90s, the film will see James and his best friends, self-proclaimed as Fab Four (after Michigan Wolverines’ ‘Fab Five’) face personal and on-court battles in the journey to success. The movie, based on Pulitzer winner Buzz Bissinger’s book of the same name, will stream on Peacock.

While the teaser came out somewhere in March, the trailer launched just yesterday. The video in question has five-star high school basketball player, Marquis “Mookie” Cook, as a young LeBron James, McLaughlin as Lil Dru, Khalil Everage as Sian Cotton, Avery S. Wills Jr. as Willie McGee, and Wood Harris as Dru Joyce.

Despite the exciting lineup and premise, fans were not excited even then or now for the biopic at all, and it has been scrutinized by fans.

Fans find LeBron James biopic ‘meh’

When the teaser came out in March this year, fans were not kind towards the same. It could be felt that they were not happy for LeBron to get a biopic because of the player’s controversial past. A fan wrote, Not interested in a LeBron James production,” while another affirmed that they, “Will not watch.”

Some even dragged in Ben Affleck’s April release, AIR, which follows Nike’s partnership with Michael Jordan and the success of Air Jordans that followed, into the discussion. Twitter, however, is not the only platform fans used to express their disdain towards the trailer.

Fans also took to the comment section of the trailer video to give their two cents. For instance, a fan commented on the way the movie is made. He’s still playing basketball and uvguys make a movie like u know if he’s gone or something lol he’s in the WCF,” the fan wrote. While another described it as “meh.” Another fan called it an imitation of 2011 documentary The Fab Five, featuring 1990s Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball players.

Fans even questioned why, despite him being the most hated player in the nation at the moment, James was getting a movie.

It is clear from the reactions that fans are not pleased with the biopic coming out. However, the cast looks promising and fans should wait for the movie to release to critique it further. Shooting Stars releases on Peacock on June 2, 2023.

Meanwhile, as for Stranger Things fans, the shooting will begin soon and you can expect a delay beyond 2024 due to the Writers Guild of America’s (WGA) strike. The writers are demanding a fair pay structure and increased wages. A lot of movies and shows have been delayed ever since the strike began on May 2nd of this year.
