National Film Registry 2024: Andrew Garfield’s ‘The Social Network’ Marks History, as Aaron Sorkin Addresses the Unconventional Screenplay
Andrew Garfield has played many memorable roles. But his portrayal of Eduardo Saverin, the co-founder of Facebook, in the 2010 biographical film, The Social Network, is still considered one of his most iconic roles. Critics continue to praise the film as one of the best of the 2010s and even the entire 21st century for being a perfectly crafted, brilliantly written, and beautifully acted story about ambition, ego, and the rise of technology. Recently, the movie hit a major milestone, even though it has been over a decade since it first hit theaters.
Taking a moment to reflect, Aaron Sorkin, the mastermind behind the screenplay, opened up about the unique writing process that director David Fincher put him through while bringing the film to life.

The Library of Congress National Film Registry recently announced the 25 films they will be preserving forever for their cultural, historical, or aesthetic importance. Among these films was Andrew Garfield’s 2010 movie, The Social Network, directed by David Fincher. The film won three Oscars, including one for its screenplay by Aaron Sorkin. Sorkin recently talked about the unique process he went through to write the screenplay for the movie.
In an interview with the Library of Congress, Sorkin recalled how, during an early planning session, director David Fincher asked him to read the entire screenplay out loud at the same pace Sorkin had heard it in his head when writing. “It felt like a good courtroom drama to me,” Sorkin said. Even Andrew Garfield, who missed out on an Oscar for this movie as well, much like his popular musical, despite fans' hopes, took a moment to reflect on his role in The Social Network.
While promoting his latest film, We Live in Time, Garfield talked about a specific scene from The Social Network that became a TikTok sensation earlier this year.
Andrew Garfield on his decade-old role in The Social Network
In September, Garfield sat down for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He was asked about a viral TikTok where users lip-synced to his famous line, “I’m sorry, my Prada’s at the cleaners…” Responding to the trend, Garfield laughed and said, “It’s passion. It’s justice.” He went on to explain that “they like outraged, righteous indignation and someone searching for justice- where Eduardo Saverin is in that moment”.

Garfield also pointed out that social media users “subliminally like seeing technology being smashed too.” The line quickly turned into a meme because of the perceived elitism it represented. On TikTok and Instagram, users mocked those with a sense of entitlement through the meme. And now, after making its way through pop culture, The Social Network will now be preserved forever as part of the nation’s film heritage.
