"My inner child was screaming"- J Balvin Reveals Why He Got Will Smith to Coachella Despite His Polarizing Image Post Slapgate
It has been two years since the infamous Oscar incident involving Will Smith shook the industry. A lot has gone down since then. Speaking of now, the scrutiny of the Academy Award-winning actor has certainly died down considerably. The biggest sign of this is Bad Boys: Ride or Die's success, which speaks volumes about people finally starting to separate the art from the artist- many of whom were clamoring for his boycott just months ago. Yet, the shadow of slapgate is still somewhere sticking with the actor in the industry.
When Smith made his Coachella appearance earlier this year with J Balvin, many fans saw it as a move to wipe the Oscar incident from memory and make a comeback after the mess. Recently, J Balvin shared his own take on the Coachella surprise.

J Balvin, the Colombian reggaeton artist, has had his share of controversy and hate from different segments of the public. Especially after the controversial music video for his song ‘Perra,’ the artist became a part of the hate train. But Balvin believes that "a mistake cannot define who you are”. That is why he brought Will Smith on stage with him at Coachella, despite the Oscars drama, as he recently told Rolling Stone. “My inner child was screaming to have him in my show,” said Balvin.
Balvin could relate to Smith and his post-Oscars ordeal, having gone through a "similar situation" himself due to alleged sexism. “I felt that some part of the world was against me for mistakes,” said the 'Mi Gente' artist while likening his experience to that of Smith. The I Am Legend actor unexpectedly lit up the stage during Balvin’s Coachella set, triggering waves of nostalgia among the audience.
This performance made it crystal clear that Will Smith will never not be a legend, no matter what happens in his personal life.

Will Smith joined J Balvin on stage in full Men in Black attire, complete with his signature shades and suit. The actor performed his 1997 smash, ‘Men in Black,’ from the movie of the same name, with his entire family in attendance at the event. After the show, fans labeled it the most bizarre Coachella moment ever, with some even questioning if they were in a simulation after the performance.
Will Smith got the crowd to sing along while Balvin danced next to him. In a funny twist, Balvin was dragged off stage by dancers in black suits, while the 55-year-old actor, known for playing Agent J, pulled out the iconic Neuralyzer to pretend to erase everyone’s memories. Of course, no Neuralyzer could ever erase the incredible night that Smith and J Balvin put on at Coachella.
