Schwarzenegger had a remarkable tenure as the 38th governor of California. More so, he marked the first time someone born outside the United States held that office. However, when he contemplated transitioning into politics, he faced significant pushback. Advisers recommended he start with a smaller role like that of a mayor and not immediately pursue the governorship. Schwarzenegger responded wittily in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, saying, “My ego is too big to run for little position like that”.
True to his adventurous nature, The Terminator actor sought out endeavors filled with risk and challenges. Thus, he considered running for the governorship as a personal challenge. Schwarzenegger was undeterred by the fact that other contenders, such as Gary Davis, had more support. He even revealed that the White House contacted him with intentions to let George W. Around 1987, Schwarzenegger had firmly established himself as an icon in the action genre. His name blazed in bold letters above movie titles, much like Al Pacino in the realm of action, and he had dispatched 283 foes on the big screen. But, despite Schwarzenegger making it in Hollywood, his appetite for challenges urged him to venture into uncharted genres.
When the actor resolved to step into more diverse roles, skeptics abounded, doubting his capabilities. However, in his book Be Useful, he emphasized that it was Ivan Reitman who placed his trust in the actor’s potential. Reitman, a director renowned for comedy, played a pivotal role in assisting Schwarzenegger. He helped him in his quest to explore uncharted genres and reveal his more humane side to the world.
