"Mortified" Matt Lucas Apologizes After ‘Little Britain’ Joke Backfired in Millie Bobby Brown Controversy

Comedy thrives on laughter, but it is not always a safe territory—especially when it treads too close to sensitive boundaries. Whether intentional or not, comedians often risk offending others, making the line between humor and harm dangerously thin. A single misstep can ignite backlash, and in today’s world, thinking twice is not enough—one must think thrice. Having said that, controversy has struck once again. This time, the spotlight falls on Matt Lucas, whose latest joke—one involving fan-favourite Millie Bobby Brown—has sparked unexpected controversy.

There are tears that follow laughter, and then there are tears caused by laughter. But sometimes, a joke does not bring either—it only brings backlash.

Humor walks a fine line, and this time, Matt Lucas found himself on the wrong side of it. The Little Britain star landed in hot water after using Vicky Pollard’s infamous catchphrase, “No but yeah but,” alongside Millie Bobby Brown's look from her recent outing when she was spotted with her younger sister, Ava, on X. The 21-year-old Stranger Things actress was spotted in Los Angeles wearing hoop earrings and a pink top, but Lucas comparison did not sit well with many. Facing backlash, the comedian swiftly apologized, admitting his joke missed the mark. "I was mortified when the press wrote I slammed you," wrote Lucas in his Instagram apology.

Lucas explained that Vicky Pollard, a character from the 2003-2006 sketch show, had blonde hair and wore a pink top, similar to Brown’s recent look. Lucas denied any intent to mock her and expressed regret over the media’s portrayal of his post. His apology followed Brown’s statement condemning media coverage of her changing appearance as “bullying.” The joke may have hit harder considering Brown recently opened up about the emotional toll of wrapping up Stranger Things with emotions at peak.
