‘Modern Family’ Spin-Off: Eric Stonestreet Faces Severe Disagreement From Fans for ABC Pushback

Once upon a time in the realm reigned by sitcoms, ABC’s Modern Family picked the cues from its before-arrivals to leave a legacy that outshines the after-arrivals. When the series wrapped up, fans felt like they were punched in the gut, and despite whispers of a spin-off, they rallied like knights defending a sacred treasure, fiercely against the idea. However, as Eric Stonestreet, the icon from the show, voiced his grievances about the pushback from ABC, the drama just went up by a notch, hotter than a summer day in LA.

In a recent conversation with Graham Bensinger, Eric Stonestreet broke the silence about the Modern Family sequel series that never got off the ground. This spin-off was set to follow the adventures of Cameron, Mitchell, and their daughter, Lily, as they traded California sunshine for Missouri vibes. Stonestreet, who was once all in on the idea, now feels that the window has slammed shut, noting that they "had their chance."

There was even a script ready to go from a couple of talented writers, including Chris Llyod, but ABC said, “We don’t want it.” As Eric Stonestreet aired his grievances, he spilled the beans on how the decision hit him, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and co-creator Chris Lloyd right in the feels. He remarked that the rejection made him and Ferguson feel like the “old guys”, not deemed worthy of keeping those beloved characters alive.

If Eric Streetstone were to ask the fans, though, the resistance has more reasons than meets the eye. They argue that Modern Family thrived because it showcased a mix of families, not just one lone household.

Fans back up their disagreement on a Modern Family spin-off with a number of reasons

Eric Stonestreet might have his take on why ABC gave a thumbs down to a Modern Family spin-off, but the fans are here to set the record straight with their own reasons. They hold the show close to their hearts, celebrating it as much as a mundane go-to as a holiday staple, much like NBC’s Friends. So in rejecting a spin-off, they are all about logical reasoning. Hence, they ensured jotting down their thoughts one by one in a thread.

Fans get the pushback might not be the best business move, but when it comes to loyalty, they have got a different story.

The creators have put the show on a pedestal thanks to its fantastic diversity, and a spin-off like the one Stonestreet envisions would clash with what made the original so fabulous. Hearing the rejection was actually “refreshing” for some because if the spin-off had happened, fan sentiments might have been tossed aside completely. Thus, with Stonestreet declaring that the spin-off’s time has passed, fans are reveling in the status quo instead of rebelling, embracing the magic of what they already have.
