Met Gala 2024: Is Kendall Jenner Really the First Person to Wear the Givenchy Haute Dress?

Published 05/07/2024, 11:20 PM EDT

The first Monday of May was everything Tinseltown wished for. Like every year, the fashion flexes at the Met Gala outshined all the other red carpet-events. Although many high-profile stars seemed to have skipped out on the biggest night of fashion, the Kardashian-Jenner sisters did not. While Kim Kardashian channeled her armored metallic mermaid in Maison Margiela, her sister, Kendall Jenner strutted the Met steps in vintage Givenchy Haute.

It seems while A-listers were busy raiding their closets, designers took the resort from fashion's storied past, blending old-world charm with a contemporary flair for stars like Jenner by making her the second star to have donned this dramatic ensemble.

Fashion embodies both the past and the present, with celebrities often seeking to etch their names into their annals by drawing inspiration from historical references. Kendall Jenner epitomized this notion at the recent Met Gala, where she donned a breathtaking creation from Givenchy Haute, originally crafted by Alexander McQueen in 1999 for Givenchy’s fall/winter collection. This iconic piece had previously graced the pages of Flaunt Magazine, worn by Winona Ryder and captured by Warwick Saint for a cover story as pointed out by mcqueen_vault on Instagram.

Jenner's dress showcased its timeless appeal, featuring intricate embellishments, daring waist cut-outs, mesh panels, and a sparkling gold spiked collar reminiscent of a contemporary Morticia Addams, albeit with a touch of glitter. While Jenner may have claimed exclusivity in wearing this sleeping beauty of the “last 25 years” during her red-carpet interview with Vogue, Winona Ryder had already set the precedent, affirming that history often repeats itself in the world of fashion.

Kendall Jenner may have reawakened the historic fashion booth at the Met Gala, but she definitely was not the only one. Hence, for fans who learned the Met Gala guidebook by heart this year, it is now time for a vogue one. Zendaya wore a spring/summer 1999 dress by John Galliano for Maison Margiela, inspired by his era at Dior and later changed into a black gown from the spring/summer 1996 collection by Givenchy from Galliano’s time.

On the other hand, Nicole Kidman wore a replica of a Balenciaga gown from 1951. Following the footsteps of Jenner, Lana Del Rey donned a Sean McGirr for Alexander McQueen design from the autumn/winter 2006 collection. Emily Ratajkowski also embraced a little walk down the timeline with Versace’s archival gown from the 2001 Atelier collection. Hence, it seems that Jenner and Hollywood- both took fashion on a timeless garden, making the Met Gala season worth it.
