Ever since Meghan Markle stepped through the distinguished gateway of the manor in the UK, conflicts have circled her and Prince Harry’s life like wildfire. Besides the criticisms from their stepping down as working royals, or the round-the-clock-scrutiny by royal observers, Markle has also often been a prey for online trolling owing to these unceasing examinations. While it was about time that the Duchess addressed the source of hatred, recently she did so quite outspokenly, leaving fans in praise.

Recently, the Sussex pair appeared at the SXSW conference in Texas for the former’s keynote panel. At first, the air was light and fans ran into a meltdown, chancing upon her flirtatious exchange with the Prince, but soon the atmosphere got denser as she moved on to her experience of online bullying. The irony was that she spoke about how the online platforms have been a source of “hatred” that “incentivizes hate pages that can churn out very, very inciting comments and conspiracy theories” while streaming on one. 

Of course, she first began by listing out the positive sides of digital platforms and how, for the speakers of the panel, this wide audience will vouch for further reach. But besides having access to all of that “brilliance” and “insights”, she also seized the opportunity to adjust how digital hostility can have a “tremendously negative effect on someone’s mental health”. 

As fans took notice of the impending conversation that needed light, they could not help but applaud the Duchess for her daring gesture.

Having been at the edge of the gun herself, who better to address digital hate speech than Markle? For fans across the globe, this connotation of resonance was everything to dive into the praise of the Duchess because reality reigns relatability. As a result, fans were all ready to back up their favorite royal as they believed that she would not be “silenced”.

Unlike the controversial threads that Markle has frequently been familiar with, this thread was just the air of positivity that was probably missing. And as a collective, fans were also of the opinion that Markle directed the “mic drop moment” to a particular streaming platform despite no direct mentions.

As the online atmospheric change brought the gateway to a fresh breeze, supporters also found a reflection of themselves within Markle. Believe it or not, most people at some point in their time have been victims of online hatred. Perhaps not in an upscale manner as Markle or big bodies of the industry, but everyone had their share of negativity to deal with.
