Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s decision to hold onto their Sussex titles, despite leaving the royal family years ago, has always been a bitter pill to swallow for royal observers. And when the couple decided to launch a website using their royal titles, critics once again frowned upon the move and accused them of leveraging titles for commercial gain, which goes against the agreement made during Megxit. Nevertheless, it appears the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are unfazed by the criticism.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry recently broke a 64-year-old tradition by changing the titles of their children on their website, sussex.com. Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet now bear the surname Sussex instead of Mountbatten-Windsor, which was established by the Privy Council in 1960 and has been applied to the male-line descendants of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. This decision to rebrand the titles was termed a “surprise” by royal insiders, as was reported by the Mirror.

Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet were not given their royal titles from birth, as they were not the grandchildren of the monarch back then. It was only after King Charles' coronation that the children were given their Prince and Princess titles, previously addressed as Master and Miss. While this website, and their retention of royal titles, are intended to follow royal tradition, it has allegedly broken a promise the Sussexes made to the late Queen.

Before making the royal exit, the Sussexes landed a few agreements with the Queen, and the website has allegedly fallen short of honoring them.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry lost their HRH titles on the official site of the royal family last year. However, just a few months following the snub, the Sussexes came up with their own website, which read, “The office of Prince Harry & Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex". Royal critics claimed that this was a breach of the promise the couple had made to Queen Elizabeth before leaving the royal fold. 

The Sussexes had allegedly made a deal of never using their royal titles for commercial gain. Angela Levin joined Martin Daubney on GB News, stating, the Sussexes are using their titles "100 per cent so they can make as much money as possible". However, some commentators felt that this was the couple's family name and there was no harm in using them officially.
