Matthew Perry, along with Friends and other stunning films, has made headlines for one more reason: his struggles with addiction and alcoholism, which he has been open about. The 54-year-old actor also wrote a book tracing his journey of diving deep into it and recovering from it, too. In his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, the Friends star takes the readers on a vulnerable and personal journey. But why did the 17 Again actor disclose his innermost moments with the world? 

The Canadian actor started drinking when he was only 14. Since then, he had been on a roller coaster ride of using various drugs. Although the actor now got out of it and is living a healthy life, he mentioned everything in his memoir that he published in November 2022. given the revelatory nature of his book, one would wonder why he wrote it in the first place. Perry answered it during his interview on Q with Tom Power. He revealed he wanted people to understand that getting rich and famous would not solve their problems.

While talking about it, the Three to Tango actor also referred to a quote by Jim Carrey. Carrey once said he wanted people to fulfill their dreams so that they would know it was not the answer. This quote stuck with Perry and he internalized it. Therefore, putting himself as an example, the Go On star also added he wanted to expose the side of an addict. Perry wanted to share the powerful message from an addict’s side because there were not many books that showcase that perspective.
