Matthew Modine’s 1987 Film Special Relic Up for Auction Ahead of Christmas Season
Today’s generation would remember Matthew Modine as the evil scientist from Hawkins lab. But his work in the world of entertainment comprises more than just Stranger Things. The actor has been working for almost half-a-century now, without a break since the 80s. While he may not have been a commercial A-lister, or a bankable lead star in movies, most actors would still kill to have a career as long and active as his. And throughout his career, Modine has been seen in several memorable movies, including a couple of war films.
One of those movies- which remains iconic to this date- recently put a relic up for auction, with a special surprise for Matthew Modine fans.

Matthew Modine starred in Stanley Kubrick’s iconic, darkly comedic Vietnam War epic, Full Metal Jacket, back in 1987. The Oscar-nominated film was inspired by Gustav Hasford's 1979 autobiographical novel, The Short-Timers. Not only does the movie remain a fan favorite today, but back in the day, it also raked in box-office numbers and earned critical acclaim. Now, a seller has put a piece of the movie up for auction on eBay- an 8x12-inch glossy photo print of Matthew Modine as Joker from the film.
The print was originally made for a recent convention Matthew Modine attended, where he was signing autographs. According to the seller, all proceeds from the auction will go toward maintaining the FMJ Diary app and funding an upcoming photography exhibition for veterans. Interestingly, just last month, DCU’s upcoming Superman movie pulled off a similar fundraising move. Speaking of DC, Modine also worked with Christopher Nolan on The Dark Knight Rises- a director often called the 'Kubrick of this generation'.
In an old interview, Matthew Modine shared an interesting tidbit from The Dark Knight Rises. Apparently, one of his scenes in the 2012 movie was so brutal that it got cut from the film.
Matthew Modine on his crucial scene that did not make the cut
During an interview on the Cinema Blend Reel Blend podcast, Matthew Modine opened up about his role as Deputy Commissioner Peter Foley in Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster, The Dark Knight Rises. He revealed that his character’s death scene was cut from the film because it was just too violent. “It was so violent that it would have gotten an NC-17 rating,” Modine said.

A mature rating like that would have hurt the film’s box-office numbers because The Dark Knight Rises had a PG-13 rating, which helped it commercially. Modine also compared the close-knit vibe on set to the work he did with Stanley Kubrick on Full Metal Jacket. Nonetheless, considering how iconic Full Metal Jacket is, it would not be surprising to see the memorabilia flying off the auction block within a snap.
