In 2020, the same mini-series comic was adapted into an animated film by Sam Liu. It seems the Argylle director has been left so impressed by the 40-year-old actor that he is convinced that another rendition with Cavill as Superman makes sense, despite James Gunn’s dismissal of him from the superhero part.
Here is what Vaughn had to say about his idea of having Henry Cavill return to his old role in Superman: Red Sun.
Matthew Vaughn parallels his love for the comic with appreciation for Cavill
During an interview with Post Cred Pod, Vaughn spoke about some of his favorite comics. Among them, he revealed that the one he found to be “the cleverest” was Superman: Red Son. The three-issue series was printed in a prestige format by DC Comics in 2003. He then went on to ponder “remaking Red Son with Henry Cavill”. According to him, it would make for “an interesting movie”.
Considering that he has sung praises of Cavill’s portrayal of Superman in the past as well, his wish to recast him is not surprising. Well, his fascination with DC’s alien savior has been long known; especially with the superhero’s nemesis, who takes a central role in Red Sun.
Earlier, the Kingsman franchise director had also revealed who he would choose to play the antagonist against Cavill’s Superman.

In the Red Sun comics, a villain almost managed to destroy Superman after being recruited to do so. This was the legendary evil scientist, Lex Luthor. While Speaking to Josh Horowitz during a Happy Sad Confused episode, Vaughn remarked that Taron Egerton would make for an “amazing Luthor”. So, it seems that the director has a main cast in mind already.
Previously, Vaughn had worked with Egerton on several projects, including the Kingsman trilogy and Rocketman. Considering his recent comments about wanting to team up with Cavill so soon after Argylle, it appears that he is loyal to the actors he works with, especially those who leave an impression.
