Margaret Qualley is done with the “obscure, artsy movies” that she has been doing and is looking to focus on the kinds of movies she actually enjoys watching—romcoms. She told Vogue Australia, “I’m so thirsty for a rom-com. I’m manifesting.” She even admitted that the kinds of films she has been doing are not the ones she would pick to watch herself. She has realized that now, she wants to be in movies that she would enjoy sitting down to watch—something lighthearted and fun.
That being said, Qualley is not ungrateful for the way her previous roles have been received. “It’s exciting when something becomes a part of the culture,” said the 30-year-old actress. But her desire to move away from these intense, edgy roles seems to have really picked up after her most recent project, The Substance, a horror-sci-fi film she starred in with Demi Moore.
Qualley talked about the difficult filming process for the project and how it made her rethink the types of roles she wants to pursue next.
Margaret Qualley had a tough time filming The Substance
The Substance was a movie that aimed to tackle Hollywood’s impossible beauty standards and encourage embracing imperfections. But according to Margaret Qualley, the whole filming process was very tight and controlled. There was no room for mistakes, and everything had to be perfect, quite ironically. She explained, “It was very challenging to shoot because I get a lot of joy out of free-falling”.

Qualley said she chose acting because it gave her the freedom to improvise and make mistakes—something she could not do when she was a teenager competing in dance competitions, where everything had to be perfect. The highly controlled environment on The Substance set, though, made her feel anxious and uncomfortable. And given how intense that experience was, it is no surprise that Qualley would want to move on to something more easygoing now.
