'Madame Web' Actress Blames “internet culture” and Memes for the Sydney Sweeney Movie Tanking

Madame Web, being one of the biggest flops in comic book movie history, was already under intense scrutiny. It became a reminder that when a movie lacks potential, not even stars of the caliber of Sydney Sweeney and Dakota Johnson can save the ship from drowning. Critics have cited many reasons for the movie’s catastrophic failure, including a weak storyline, comic inaccuracy, and even bad marketing. However, no one could have thought that fans would also be thrown under the bus for the movie's colossal flop.

While the reasons are endless for the movie to fail making its mark, popular Madame Web actress has now laid the blame at fans' feet for the movie’s failure as well.

Emma Roberts, who played Mary Parker in Madame Web, is one of the few who have loved the Sony movie. In a recent interview on this week’s Just for Variety podcast, the actress shared that she has “really enjoyed the movie”. She also believed Madame Web could have done well “if it wasn’t for internet culture and everything being made into a joke”. In the segment, she also subtly touched on Dakota Johnson’s earlier statement about the movie tanking.

Johnson told Bustle in March that Madame Web’s failure was not a surprise for her, and she saw it coming all along. The actress also shared that she “probably will never do anything like it again”. When Variety mentioned Johnson’s statement, Roberts stated, “Everyone likes to act like they can predict if they’re going to work or they’re not”. While Roberts and Johnson clearly stood at different opinions, Sydney Sweeney made the best of a bad situation.

Earlier this year, Sydney Sweeney appeared for an interview with Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused podcast. During the interview, she pointed out the timeline of both her projects, Madame Web and Anyone But You. Sweeney explained that Madame Web was her first studio project, a Sony studio project to be precise, which became a “building block” for the Immaculate actress.

It was the relationship she had built with Sony for Madame Web that helped her secure Anyone But You. Sweeney herself pitched the idea of forging a "relationship" with Sony. "I would never have been able to do that without Madame Web”, said the actress. Madame Web also received a positive response upon its debut on Netflix, lending some amount of credibility to Emma Roberts' claims.
