2025 has officially begun, bringing with it the start of the film awards season. Hollywood just hosted its first major award show of the year, the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, which took place on January 5. And since then, fans have been eagerly awaiting several other events, including the Critics' Choice Movie Awards. However, just ahead of these marquee events, a trio of devastating wildfires tore through the greater Los Angeles region, forcing the cancellation of several film and music-related gatherings.

Here is a rundown of the major events that were canceled or postponed due to the LA fires.

The LA premieres of Unstoppable and Wolf Man, along with an awards season event for Emilia Pérez, were called off on Tuesday. By Wednesday, red carpets for Better Man, The Pitt, and On Call had also been scrapped. Meanwhile, the celebration of the film hosted by Donna Langley and Universal Film Entertainment Group, planned for January 10, and the BAFTA Tea Party, set for January 11, were both canceled.

The American Cinematheque also postponed its Tribute to the Crafts awards show, originally slated for January 9, as well as the 2025 Critics' Choice Awards, which had been scheduled for January 12. Additionally, a pop-up event at Complex LA to mark the five-year anniversary of Selena Gomez’s 'Rare' album, planned for January 10–12, was put on hold. Although the winds were expected to die down by Wednesday night, the city has cleared its events calendar for the next few days out of caution and respect for those affected by the fires.

One might hope for a silver lining in all this, given that Hollywood is in its 'dump months'—a period infamous for fewer major releases or events. Unfortunately, that is far from the reality this year.

2025 is breaking the Hollywood dump month stereotype

In the film industry, January has long been known as a 'dump month'. Traditionally, it is when studios release movies they do not have much faith in—assuming post-holiday audiences would rather hibernate than head to the theater. But January 2025 is shaping up to shatter that stereotype, with a lineup of high-profile releases including Mickey 17, the sequel Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, Wolf Man, and more.

This release schedule suggests that studios are rethinking their approach and are now treating January as a prime window for major debuts. Factors like the rise of streaming platforms and the year-round appetite for fresh content likely played a role in this shift. With these major January releases, studios can capitalize on lighter competition and satisfy audiences' hunger for new entertainment after the holiday lull.
