Just One Day After Emmy Awards Nominations, Studios and Streamers Hit With SAG-AFTRA Strike: Here Is What This Means
On Wednesday, the Television Academy rolled out the list of nominees for the 75th Annual Emmy Awards. This announcement brought some major celebratory moments for streaming giant Netflix, which had several shows listed down. While it also turned out a victorious moment for breakout faces like Jenna Ortega and iconic performers like Pedro Pascal. And when all the fans of these shows and actors were going gaga over them, SAG-AFTRA Strike dropped a bomb that might hit the industry hard.
SAG-AFTRA recently revealed that their negotiation for a new contract with Hollywood studios has collapsed. The previous agreement, which was made for three years, expired at 11:59 pm PDT Wednesday. According to CNN, the union already extended it for one month, but when the deal did not strike, the board voted unanimously to start a strike.

“We are committed to the negotiating process and will explore and exhaust every possible opportunity to make a deal,” said the union statement. However, they have made it quite clear that there would be no negotiation about the demands of employees as they have already waited for a positive outcome which they did not get. Therefore, they will now join the screenwriters who have been striking against the studios for 90 days now.
Several famous faces would hit the streets to represent 160,000 actors. And if this happens, this would mark the first time when Hollywood will face an industrywide shutdown in six decades. Moreover, the demand of the council is quite similar to those of writers. The actors need higher wages, increased residual payments, and safety from the growing use of artificial intelligence to secure jobs. And this thing might be the biggest problem for the streamers who have not coped with the WGA strike.

The WGA strike has already halted all the major projects in Hollywood, including flagship shows like Stranger Things and Euphoria. This SAG-AFTRA strike might further ruin their whole graph, bringing the fury of viewers to themselves. Netflix subscribers have remained patient for the goodwill of writers and said they can wait.
It seems that the plans of the streaming company of bringing overseas show for people to hook them might fail this time. This wave might be disastrous for the OTT platforms, considering they are losing everything people love them for.
