Especially the sudden uptick of thriller rollouts this year has had cinephiles glued to Tinseltown like never before, waiting for the next plot twist with bated breath and unrelenting patience. Amidst the confusion surrounding which projects to keep an eye out for, writer and director Joe Russo took a moment to hype a select-few Borderline stars.

Russo even took a step further, drawing parallels between James Gunn’s Joker and Harley Quinn and the Borderline actors.

Joe Russo, the three-time Bloodlist screenwriter of The Inheritance (2024), recently took to X to share a unique review of Borderline, Jimmy Wardern’s 2025 comedy-thriller, serving as his directorial debut. “Watching Ray Nicholson and Samara Weaving in BORDERLINE and I couldn’t help thinking I’d found James Gunn’s Joker and Harley Quinn,” Russo wrote on X. The producer additionally recommended renting Borderline to the audience, highlighting it as a “banger.” 

Borderline follows a pop sensation and her obsessive admirer, who breaks into her home convinced they are destined for matrimony and gradually manipulates her into buying into his fantasy and twisted delusion. The film was recently released on March 14, by Magnet Releasing with Margot Robbie serving as an executive producer. LuckyChap Entertainment and Productivity Media have produced the psychological thriller with Warden as both director and writer.

That said, what do Ray Nicholson and Samara Weaving portray in Borderline?

According to the official synopsis of Borderline, Ray Nicholson plays Duerson, the unhinged fan, and Samara Weaving portrays Sofia, the pop star. Additionally, Eric Dane is on board with the project as Bell, Alba Baptista as Penny, and Jimmie Fails as Rhodes. This is not the only hotly anticipated comedy thriller creating a hype this year, but Joe Russo’s comparisons to James Gunn’s Joker and Harley Quinn surely add value to the anticipation.

Borderline is set in the 1990s in Los Angeles with cinematography by Michael Alden Lloyd. Tom Ackerly, Josey McNamara, Hadeel Reda, and Brian Duffield have produced the film. Principal photography reportedly began 2022 September in Vancouver, Canada, and entered post-production with Margot Robbie attached as a producer.
