Jennifer Aniston’s Rachel Green Set the Bars High Enough as Ross’ Girlfriend for Emily Waltham to Walk Off ‘Friends’, Once Revealed Director
In the long-standing history of pop culture, few shows have had as much of a redefining impact on pop culture as Friends. The sitcom has weaved its narratives through the hearts of generations. Carried through by performances as unique as each of its cast, the show has become a yardstick that others aspire to be. Moments laden with an air of sarcasm from the late Matthew Perry to the goofiness of Matt LeBlanc’s Joey have stayed etched. However, one riveting hook for the show was the on-off romance between the characters of Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer.
Interestingly, the romance, even in its infancy, struck such a chord that it became one of the reasons behind the actress playing Emily packing her bags off the show.

“I, Ross, take thee, Rachel,” said David Schwimmer’s Ross before unsuccessfully trying to rectify it with “Emily”. The iconic line went on to further cement the pivotal romance as one of the show’s anchors. Yet, Helen Baxendale, playing Emily, made her debut on season four of Friends and was destined to stay. Except that she did not last any longer than 14 episodes. In his autobiography, director James Burrow revealed the reason to be Schwimmer’s chemistry with the actress. “It was like clapping with one hand,” he opined.
Ross and Rachel Green became an effective couple because “The funny is just as important as the chemistry.” Jennifer Aniston had the necessary comedic timing to echo Schwimmer’s. However, with Baxenadle, it was all falling flat. “We discovered that any new girlfriend for Ross needed to be as funny as Rachel,” Burrow went on. Instead of opting to recast the actress, the show went ahead and scrapped the narrative altogether. Regardless, what finally stayed on the plate stands as a legacy on its own.
The story of the duo’s romance spilled beyond their on-screen characters with a star-crossed real-life backstory.

In its ten-year long run, Friends not only gave its fans solace but also its co-stars’ unrequited burdens. In May 2021, a special reunion episode saw David Schwimmer admitting to having a crush on Jennifer Aniston, and the latter confirming it back. However, fate played out that despite their mutual feelings, they could never be together. Schwimmer reasoned it was because one of them was always in a relationship and thus, it never worked out.
Interestingly, in their episodes, the duo channeled their desires and let them spill out oblivious to many. Mirroring, their character arcs at times, the couple simply went their ways. Soon after the show ended, they would go on their separate lives, with Aniston marrying Pitt in 2000 and Schwimmer tying the knot with Zoë Buckman.
