The NBC sitcom, Friends, throughout its decade-long run had made its special place as the comfort show for millennials. As viewers engaged with the series like an extended family, the showrunners formed a second home for one another beyond the glamorous allure of on-screen commitments. Time and again, revelations concerning Jennifer Aniston’s involvement and impact on Matthew Perry’s life beyond the reel screen came to the surface.

As one of the biggest confidante for Perry, Aniston is known for always reaching out to him. However, just a few years ago, Aniston’s disclosure regarding one of Perry’s confession suggested how she had underestimated his anxiety.

This confession came in the way of the core-cast members during the shooting for Friends: The Reunion. The blue mood did not only hover over Aniston, but also to the rest of the co-stars. Previously as well, Aniston had disclosed how the reunion was rather bittersweet for the actors. Her acknowledgment of the get-together being “really intense” also vouches for Perry’s unburdening.

Perry’s off-screen contemplation undoubtedly dampened the spirits of the co-stars. But, the relevance of his fear was also evident in one of the episodes from Friends.

The one where Chandler was not the funniest guy

Matthew Perry’s humorous nuances have been a haven for the viewers on good days and bad days alike. His on-screen representation of Chandler Bing had the characteristic trait of being the funniest guy. Chandler’s struggle to refrain from making jokes nearly pushed him to hysteria at certain points. The same was in view when Monica revealed meeting the “funniest guy” ever, which was not Chandler.

In the episode, confronting the disconcerting awareness that he was not the “funniest guy” felt akin to experiencing his worst nightmare. Hence, Chandler channeled his inner Monica and went on a competitive spree. Given the profound resemblance between his on-screen disheartenment and off-screen fear, it is evident that his reel portrayal transcended the confines of a mere scripted performance.
