Earlier today, X (previously Twitter) blew up with reports regarding the release of the still-unnamed flick starring Jenna Ortega, Barry Keoghan and Abel Tesfaye, popularly known as The Weeknd. Many sources suggested that the much-awaited movie will come out sometime this year. Considering that the buzz around the project had fizzled out since it was initially announced in January last year, fans are obviously enthralled to hear this news.

While it still remains unnamed, it is known that the director for it will be Trey Edward Shults. Meanwhile, the 21-year-old Scream star serves a multi-faceted role in it. She has taken up the role of executive producer as well as a headlining actor in it. Even the Canadian singer, will be lending his writing prowess to the movie.

As The Weeknd enters a new era in his entertainment career, some are not quite pleased with this development.

The Weeknd received critique over this decision

When it was first announced that Tesfaye would be writing as well as acting in the aforementioned movie, fans were not as impressed as he probably expected them to be. Some argued that he was not cut for cinema and should stick to his musical endeavors instead. Then, a couple of months later, Elon Musk also trolled both Ortega and The Weeknd through an X post. Albeit in a different context, the timing made some wonder if he was casting doubt on the flick too.

Judging by the update regarding its release, these doubts and protests by his fans did not stop Tesfaye from moving ahead with the flick’s production. With The Weeknd’s fresh skills, plus Shults and Ortega’s combined experience steering the movie, it may just prove these doubts wrong too. With so much left to the audience’s imagination still, its results remain to be seen.
