Despite the pandemic and lockdown officially becoming archival words, given the years that have passed by since the virus outbreak, the impact that it had on cinemas and movie theaters could only be properly reversed by 2023 and 2024 with the Barbenheimer phenomenon and Deadpool & Wolverine making a joint comeback, raising the stakes for 2025.

Despite the shoes being large, 2025 is slated to be quite the blockbuster year owing to a list of five movies set to release this year.

This year is set to be the year of big sequels even though 2024 saw the release of Bad Boys: Ride or Die and Deadpool & Wolverine. According to a poll originally posted by Bovada Official on X, the movies that are expected to be the highest-grossing in 2025 are Zootopia 2, Jurassic World: Rebirth, Avatar 3, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Wicked: For Good.

While the Zootopia sequel starring Jason Bateman as Nick had a lower probability, along with Jurassic World, Avatar 3, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Wicked: For Good, all tied to be the highest grossing movie of 2025. It is unclear how true to these predictions the actual results will be, but looking at the spectacular cast and crew that these titles boast of, the sky is the limit.

One prediction, however, on the above list has a lower chance of breaking the glass ceiling owing to its current standing.

That 2024 was an impeccable year for movies is a fact that Joker: Folie À Deux will definitely not agree with. But despite the brouhaha, it was not the only title that did not make the roar it was expected to at the box office. The grand musical Wicked that crowded the award season, too raked in $686 million worldwide. While this is no easy feat, it does make it difficult for Wicked: For Good to become the highest-grosser in 2025.

Despite the star-studded cast, and the basked in cookie batter reviews, the biggest factor in Wicked not being a thunder strike at the box office is simply due to it being a musical. Regardless, with the movie having proven that it is quite the stellar it could be possible that fans cut the second movie more slack.
