Earlier this month, the Creature Commandos series marked the beginning of the revamped DCU under James Gunn and Peter Safran. Fans are already excited about the upcoming Superman movie starring David Corenswet, especially after the epic first teaser. Now, with the third DCU project on the horizon, fans have been throwing out their ideas for the next big superhero storylines for months. And among these, a fresh take on The Flash has been a popular suggestion. But it looks like the DCU is not quite ready to dive into that just yet.

James Gunn recently shared an important update about the Flash project, and unfortunately, it was not the kind fans were hoping for.

James Gunn, while doing his usual Q&A on social media, recently let slip a major DCU update. The executive clearly stated that there is no Flash movie on the horizon. “We’re holding a beat on development, added the former MCU visionary on Threads. However, the 58-year-old did not specify how long this wait might be. It is also possible that the makers are a bit iffy about going ahead with a Flash project, considering the underwhelming reception of Ezra Miller’s 2023 movie, The Flash

The Flash received mixed response and brought in only $271 million worldwide against a budget of $200–220 million. Nonetheless, James Gunn told the press, as reported by Deadline, that The Flash is “probably one of the greatest superhero movies ever made” and its storyline "resets everything" for the franchise. Even so, instead of Flash, the DCU would be taking on a comparatively less prominent superhero.

Replying to the same Thread question, Gunn shared why they have put a Flash project on hold, while greenlighting their third DCU project.

The reason behind Flash's delay in the DCU

It was recently announced that Mike Flanagan, the mastermind behind hits like The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, has been penning a script for a Clayface movie. The movie has even been scheduled for a 2026 release. On Threads, when a fan asked James Gunn about the choice of Clayface for a project instead of a more popular character, the filmmaker stated that one, golden rule that DCU religiously follows- “No movie will be greenlit before the script is ready”.

Earlier this month, Gunn told i09 that the concept for a Clayface movie was not originally his. It was Flanagan who pitched the idea. However, after reading the first and second draft penned by Flanagan, Gunn was convinced about making the project. “If there’s quality stuff, we can find a way to work it in,” added the studio executive. But, about the Flash movie, there is nothing in the pipeline as of yet.
