James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Will Fly Into the Super Bowl, but There Is a Catch
About a month ago, the first teaser trailer for Superman dropped online, and as anyone can imagine, fans lost their minds. The DCEU began with 2013’s Man of Steel, and while there have been some great successes, the franchise has struggled to match the critical acclaim and box office numbers of its rival, the MCU. But with the new movie starring David Corenswet, the DCU is getting another shot to step up and possibly go toe-to-toe with Marvel Studios. And it looks like this exciting battle could kick off right at the upcoming Super Bowl LIX.
Alongside the MCU films that will premiere their trailers at the Super Bowl, Gunn’s Superman will also make an appearance—but with a twist.

Like every year, studios will roll out some of the major movie trailers during Super Bowl LIX on February 9, 2025. But it looks like Warner Bros., which has a habit of skipping the Super Bowl, is sitting out this year too. They are reportedly holding back their entire 2025 lineup, including the highly anticipated Superman reboot directed by James Gunn. That said, fans will still get a sneak peek of the movie during the pre-Super Bowl Puppy Bowl event, where Gunn will also reportedly share a special message with viewers.
In fact, reports also say that Gunn will appear during The Puppy Bowl with his dog Ozu, who inspired the super dog Krypto in the film. Studios like Disney, Paramount, and Universal are among the few shelling out $7.5 million to $8 million for a 30-second Super Bowl ad. However, Sony, Netflix, Amazon, MGM, Lionsgate, and Apple Studios are expected to skip the Super Bowl this year, just like Warner Bros. On the other hand, the MCU has big plans for the event.
Marvel Studios is bringing even more trailers to the Super Bowl this year than last.
The MCU’s lineup of trailers for Super Bowl LIX
Super Bowl trailers have proved to generate significant online engagement, which also affects box office performances in a positive way. And the MCU, as always, knows how to make the most of this opportunity. This year, several MCU movies are set to drop their trailers during Super Bowl LIX, and instead of just one, the studio will be showing off two of its three major 2025 films.

The movies include Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Last year, the most-watched trailer on social media during the Super Bowl was Deadpool & Wolverine, with 75.4 million views. Hopefully, this year’s Super Bowl spots will do the same for the MCU. Now it is to be seen whether DCU will be able to outshine MCU’s promotional push with its box office numbers.
