“It’s like penguins” – How the ‘Friends’ Cast Carried Matthew Perry Through His Dark Days
Life is hard, but the good company of friends makes it fun enough to sail through. While the Friends sitcom has helped its fans cut through some of the most daunting situations in their lives, its cast did the same for the beloved Matthew Perry. The youngest of the six main actors, the Chandler Bing actor, fell prey to addiction and had his life turned around in the flash of an eye. When everything stood bleak for him, it was the stellar cast that carried him through.
The master of wits drew a beautiful analogy using penguins to get his point about the helping hand of the cast across.

An on-screen charmer with a beguiling sense of sarcasm had a whirlpool of dark fates going in him that only he was aware of. Matthew Perry got into an addiction to opioids and alcohol, especially after a jet-ski accident in 1997. At one time during Friends, he was taking anywhere close to 55 pills a day, which had his appearance vary vastly between seasons. However, despite the troubles, the star cast held on to Perry. In talks with People in October 2022, he opened up about how his friends from Friends “were understanding, and they were patient.”
Drawing a parallel from the bountiful treasures of nature, the now 54-year-old likened his mates to “It’s like penguins”. In the wild, penguins have a tendency to flock around a fallen member and circle around it until it gets back on its feet. And it was precisely what the cast did for Perry. He has also been vocal about their support from time to time. From shedding light on his favorite among the cast to having fond memories of the past, the actor is certainly on a better path in life now.
The revelations hold quite significance for Perry, who has, at times, been dangerously close to death.

To think of today’s pop culture without the actor’s inclusion of sarcasm is to have a salad without vegetables. The undeniable influence and countless memories that Matthew Perry has left behind have oftentimes or not come at the cost of his own life. In 2018, owing to an addiction-related overdose, the actor had to cope with a burst colon. Such dire was the situation that he was in a two-week coma with doctors leaving him with a mere two percent chance of survival.
Fortunately, he was back. Yet, the star once again faced a similar state back in 2020. While filming Don’t Look Up, a combination of drugs made his heart stop beating for five whole minutes. Although he was back to life at the expense of eight broken ribs. As of now, the actor is now in a much better shape and state of life.
