While The Penguin season 2 is not officially happening, Warner Bros. executive Channing Dungey confirmed to Deadline that it is still “definitely a possibility.” The show was always meant as a limited series, but Dungey revealed everyone involved would be open to returning—if schedules align. With Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb now ruling Gotham’s underworld and The Batman – Part II set to hit theaters in October 2027, there is still room for a return that fits the franchise’s future timeline.
Even with no green light so far, fans have reason to stay hopeful. The Penguin scored three Golden Globes, broke audience records, set box office records, and concluded on a cliffhanger, teasing Oz’s future clash with Pattinson’s Batman. Both director Matt Reeves and showrunner Lauren LeFranc have expressed interest in continuing the story if the right vision emerges. As reported, it may take a few years to bring season 2 to life—but Gotham’s darkest days may not be over yet.
As the wait for The Penguin's future continues, it is clear that a lot is happening in Gotham behind the scenes. While the future of Oswald Cobblepot's story remains uncertain, The Batman – Part II is moving ahead with its own developments.
The Batman Part II faces major delay with script still incomplete
Over three months since its delay, The Batman – Part II is still without a finished script, as confirmed by Warner Bros. co-CEOs Pam Abdy and Mike De Luca in a new Deadline interview. The writing process, they say, is entirely in Matt Reeves’ hands, with DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran trusting him to deliver the story when it is ready. The movie, originally set for 2025, was pushed to October 2027 due to the slow progress. James Gunn also addressed the delay on Threads.

Gunn added that once the writing is done, the film will still require nearly two years for production and post. During a separate interview with Variety, Reeves confirmed they are still finishing the script and plan to shoot next year. Warner Bros. is now expected to fill Batman’s old release slot with a Tom Cruise and Alejandro G. Iñárritu movie. With The Batman – Part II not arriving until 2027, any continuation of The Penguin will likely have to wait its turn in Gotham’s long game.
