Over the years, there have been many Oscar-worthy performances that were pushed aside. Although Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s recent snub has taken over the world; is it truly the biggest Academy Award snub that fans have seen in recent history? While the nomination snub might have outraged fans, it is not the first time that something like this has happened to a fan-favorite contender.

Robbie and Gerwig’s Barbie snub might be the hottest debate of the 2024 awards season. However, other iconic actresses have also missed out on some rather well-deserving awards in the past.

For years, it has been seen that many fan favorites fail to bring out the same success at the Academy Awards. With Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer likely to sweep the awards show and Margot Robbie’s Barbie being shunned, let’s take a look at five other actresses who have missed out on landing an Oscar even though their fans had expected them to win it.

Florence Pugh

Florence Pugh was not snubbed by the Academy Awards once, but twice. While her performances in Little Women (2020) and Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry, Darling (2022) were well deserving of an Oscar, the actress ended up being overlooked. In fact, it happened once again at this year’s nomination when she failed to score a nod for a role as Jean Tatlock.

With the actress showcasing her range and depth through the portrayal of various complex characters, fans have been left confused as to why she has yet to make the Oscar nomination list. Although it might be time for the 28-year-old to have her day in the sun, it looks like fans might have to wait till next year to see if the actress can find a way onto the elite list.

While Pugh’s struggle might be more recent, there have been some stars who have been eyeing for an Oscar win since the early 90s.

Angela Basset

Most Marvel fans might know Angela Basset as Queen Ramonda, but the actress behind the character has done a lot more than just playing supporting roles in superhero films. From romcoms to action films, the 65-year-old has done it all. The actress has only been nominated for an Oscar twice in her decades-long career.

The first time was back in 1994 for the Best Actress award for her movie, What’s Love Got to Do with It. Her second nomination came years later in 2023, when she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. While it might have been an achievement to be nominated for a Marvel film, Basset ultimately lost both awards.

Glenn Close

Before the world was taken over by Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt, there was a whole other set of Hollywood greats that used to grace the silver screens. From Meryl Streep to Judy Dench, talented actresses could be found all over. With such stunning stars all around, there was one who was overlooked. It was acclaimed by actress, Glenn Close. While she had first been nominated for an Oscar in ’82, at 76 years old, she is still yet to bag an Academy Award.

The actress did come rather close to being recognized for her roles in Dangerous Liaisons and The Natural. However, she ended up losing out to stars who had taken their performances to a whole new level. With 8 Academy Award nominations up her sleeve, Close has become the only celebrity to have that many nominations, yet zero wins so far.

Although 8 might seem like a huge number, Close is not the only actress who has racked up a long list of nominations over the years.

Amy Adams

Similarly to Glenn Close, Amy Adams has also been snubbed by the Oscars quite a few times. While the actress has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress five times, she has not yet bagged an award. From Vice to Junebug and The Fighter and more, the 49-year-old has proved time and time again that she is more than deserving of an Academy Award. However, those dreams have not yet come to fruition.

Apart from losing out to other stars, Adams also faced a similar instance to Margot Robbie’s Barbie snub. Back in 2017, fans had thought that the actress’ role in Arrival would get her nominated for an Oscar for the 7th time. However, she was unexpectedly left out of the list.

Judy Garland

Judy Garland might best be known for her role in the 1939 cult classic, Wizard of Oz. However, the actress was never acknowledged by the Academy Awards for her role as she was just sixteen when the film came out. Her first nomination came in 1954 for her film, A Star Is Born. Unfortunately, the actress/singer ended up losing out to Grace Kelly. After that, it took the actress a little longer to be noticed by the awards show.

It was not until 1962, that Garland was nominated for an Oscar once again. This time it was for the courtroom drama, Judgment at Nuremberg. While fans who had watched it expected the star to take home the prestigious award. That was not the case. Instead, Rita Moreno ended up bagging the award for West Side Story.
