People collect Hollywood memorabilia for all sorts of reasons. For some, it is their passion and fandom, their way of feeling a sense of accomplishment. Then there is the other kind- bored rich people who splash their cash on every luxury acquisition under the sun. From Marilyn Monroe’s dresses and Muhammad Ali’s boxing gloves to Kylie Minogue’s underwear, the world is full of eccentric collectors hunting their next big thrill. Recently, yet another collectible got auctioned off, and fans could not help but poke fun at it.

Late actress Judy Garland’s ruby slippers that she wore in the 1939 musical, The Wizard of Oz, recently found an owner. Handled by Dallas-based Heritage Auctions, the slippers got sold for $28 million. If we add the buyer’s premium, the total amount would be a whopping $32.5 million. This auction broke some major records of previous memorabilia purchases, including a popular Marilyn Monroe relic.

Following the auction, auctioneer Mike Sadler announced at the podium that The Wizard of Oz slippers had surpassed the previous auction record of the Marilyn Monroe white halter dress designed by William Travilla. The pop culture icon wore the dress in 1955’s The Seven Year Itch. “The breathtaking result reflects just how important movies and movie memorabilia are to our culture and to collectors,” said Joe Maddalena, executive vice president of Heritage Auctions, in a statement following the bid.

Fans, however, have turned this event into a laughter-fest. While some have ridiculed the slippers, others have been speculating about its potential buyer ever since the news got out.

Fans find the auction amount of The Wizard of Oz’s Ruby slippers’ ridiculous

One of the most fanatical hoarders of film memorabilia in Hollywood is Kim Kardashian. Whether it was her controversial Marilyn Monroe Met Gala dress, Princess Diana's cross necklace, or Michael Jackson's ‘Smooth Criminal’ hat, the billionaire businesswoman has an obsession for iconic items worn by famous people. And as the The Wizard of Oz relic went under the hammer, fans immediately trolled Kim Kardashian, claiming that it must be her, again, who bought the historical item.

Fans were shocked by the auction amount of the slippers and could not understand why anyone would spend so much on the relic.

Before Kim Kardashian, Debbie Reynolds was known as the most famous collector of Hollywood memorabilia. And among the multiple pairs of the Ruby Slippers, she got one for her vintage collection. There were also buyers, including a syndicate led by Leonardo DiCaprio, who bought versions of the same slippers. But who the latest buyer of the iconic slippers is, remains anonymous.
