In the latest refresh to the heart-tugging genre, the Australian backdrop movie carried itself largely on the shoulders of its two leads whose oozing chemistry sizzled in press events and trailers, coming across as a major pull for the audiences. Now, a few days into the release, the two artists once again showcased why they were the perfect fit for the flick.

Despite the denial by the couple, something about them still taps into a curious fanbase. A recent video once again reignited the debate of speculations.

Anyone But You landed across 3000 theaters on December 22, 2023, and just crossed its first weekend. As fans and critics dissected the movie scene by scene, one mention remained constant – the natural chemistry between Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. Backing up on it, the leads themselves proved it again in a promotional video with The Hollywood Reporter. When asked who that one person Powell would call if he had a flat tire, he pointed straight at Sweeney.

The 26-year-old actress reciprocated it back with “I would call you too”. However, the chemistry stood evident in whispers, hints, laughs, and eye contact that they could hardly back off from sharing. Meanwhile, both Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell have repelled any questions about dating with the former stating, “It’s a rom-com. That’s what people want!” Regardless, the actor’s massive knowledge base of Sweeney spoke throughout the length of the video, hinting at one strong bond.

Even as promotions continued, the rom-com made its way to the screens and has come out with some contrasting results.

Anyone But You divides critics and audiences

Soon after its release, viewers exited the theaters in glee and could not stop from recreating the joyful moments. Along with its theme song of ‘Unwritten’, several recreated skits from the movie trended on social media, some of which received a first-hand share from Sydney Sweeney herself. However, by the end of the weekend, the film had amassed $9 million alongside a divided reception.

Critics at Rotten Tomatoes pegged Anyone But You at 49% while IMDb affixed a 6.4/10 and Metacritic, 54% to the flick. Interestingly, the audiences sharply differed with 86% on Rotten Tomatoes and largely positive reviews. Finally, with a Netflix release around April 20 and a staggered worldwide rollout, the movie stands to make up for its budget of $25 million.
