“I was never making…” – James Gunn Defends Henry Cavill’s Superman Replacement
In the golden era of cinema, Henry Cavill portrayed Superman with iconic brilliance. As the mild-mannered reporter, The Witcher actor made leaping off of tall buildings look effortless. His chiseled physique and earnest gaze were picture-perfect for the symbol of hope that was Superman. Yet for James Gunn, Zack Snyder’s choice for the savior from Krypton did not make the cut. Since taking on the helm of DC Studios, Gunn has made many controversial decisions.
The one that enraged fans most was when he recently re-cast Cavill with a man who could pass off as a good lookalike of the 40-year-old. Because Cavill may have etched himself into the pantheon of Superman actors, but his fans are not ready to let go of him yet.

When Gunn chose David Corenswet over Cavill for Superman: Legacy, it led to a barrage of criticism. The Co-CEO of DC received such massive backlash that he was forced to clear up certain rumors. Addressing speculations about whether he aimed to create a “young Superman movie”, Gunn replies to a Threads user. His reply read, “I was never making a ‘young Superman’ movie.”

Another contender for the role, 50 Shades of Grey star Jamie Dornan recently revealed the hilarious reason he lost out on Superman’s part. But fans still wonder why the Black Adam actor was replaced by Gunn’s “just a Superman movie” in the first place!
While he did pen down one long sentence aimed at debunking assumptions about his upcoming Superman movie, James Gunn will need to do a lot more. Same goes for The Witcher producer Tomek Bagiński, who used Cavill’s Superman exit to justify a preposterous thing.

Since Cavill’s exit from The Witcher, its producer has been bombarded with many questions. In what appears to be a taunt for the 40-year-old, Bagiński recently said that Cavill’s character, Geralt, had reached “the level of” Superman and James Bond. It is commonly known that Cavill has long coveted the 007 part which makes it seem like Bagiński was rubbing salt on his wounds by referring to the parts he had lost over time.
The producer understandably received a lot of hate from netizens over this comment. But all this uproar can not bring Cavill back to the show. Similarly, all the scepticism for James Gunn cannot reverse his decision to bring in Corenswet for Superman: Legacy.
