“I was…an ethnic chameleon”-Meghan Markle on How Her Black-And-White Ethnicity Put a Chokehold on Her Career
Whether an-lister or otherwise, the world is sure to try to knock down any rising star in every aspect. Be it entertainment, sports, politics, or whatever, for that matter, there will be extreme forces trying to pull you down each time you step up in the racks. And who could relate to being this better than a biracial divorcee who had a gazillion worth of dreams of taking over the Hollywood industry? The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, has been the finest example in current times who turned every other obstruction coming her way into an opportunity.
The journey, however, has not been really smooth. Every newbie in the industry has to go through the initial struggle phase before that one final breakthrough. But in Markle’s case, it was more about her personal life putting brakes on her professional career. In an age-old interview with Elle Magazine, Markle broke down how her ethnicity created an impossible hurdle for her during her initial years in the industry.
Ethnically ambiguous as she was ‘pegged’ in the industry, Markle used the opportunity to dive into multiple auditions, morphing from a black African American to a white Caucasian. Nonetheless, all of it went in vain. “I wasn’t black enough for the black…I wasn’t white enough for the white,” expressed a helpless Markle back then. It only left her “somewhere in the middle as the ethnic chameleon who couldn’t book a job,” she added.

Time and again, the actress-turned-duchess has expressed how the US network show had completely altered her life. In a phase where all she would get was disapproval, disappointment, and distinction, Suits was the only place that recognized her talent.
Starting from the casting directors and everyone in the crew, everyone had her back during times of sorrow and despair. Later, Markle was hailed as the perfect fit for Rachel Zane, who brought her to the pinnacle of her acting career. Her success story with the show does not end even if it is years past before she bid farewell to the show. The paralegal franchise, which was removed from the American streamer, is currently back on Netflix in high demand. It is, in fact, trending as the top 10 shows on Netflix in the US at the moment.
