Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have really turned Wrexham into something special. The club is now one of the most recognizable in the world. While the Red Dragons are shining in League One, Reynolds is already hoping for another promotion this season and Phil Parkinson is dreaming of the Premier League. But the jump from just being a football team to embracing all the Hollywood glamor was not exactly an easy transition for everyone, including their star player, Paul Mullin.

Mullin recently opened up about how he was a little unsure about the changes when Wrexham started becoming more than just a sports team under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's guidance.

Paul Mullin recently sat down for an interview with Mirror and talked about how the entertainment industry played a big part in spreading the word about Wrexham to the other side of the world. He admitted, “at first it seemed quite dumb.” Mullin added, “I used to feel embarrassed by it.” But over time, he shook off the embarrassment, letting his skills on the field do the talking, and turned what he felt was embarrassing into “pride.” He also reflected on his accident with Nathan Bishop that led to his lung being punctured.

Mullin shared how Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were a huge help after the accident. Reynolds offered to fly his whole family out, while McElhenney offered him his place in Los Angeles. In 2021, Mullin was the first big-name to sign under the Hollywood duo after their takeover. But joining Wrexham was not just about fame or a fat paycheck for Mullin- it was about something deeper.

When Paul Mullin made the move to Wrexham, many fans jumped to conclusions, thinking it was for the money or the Hollywood spotlight of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds. But Mullin revealed in an interview with The Guardian in April 2024 that there was a lot more to it. He shared, “I’d love to play for Wales, the country where my nan was born.” That personal connection to his roots was a huge reason behind his decision. Mullin went on to explain why he switched teams.

"I signed a new contract with Wrexham in January because I absolutely adore it," said Mullin. But the “main reason” was that being in Wrexham allows him to be closer to home and spend more time with his son. Since joining, Mullin has been a sensation for the team. And even though he has had his doubts about the decision, he is still likely to go down as one of the club’s greatest-ever players.
