Henry Cavill never tried to hide his love for The Witcher franchise. From the books to the games, the man had already been hooked on to everything since before he landed the role of Geralt of Rivia. This is why his announcement of leaving the series after 3 short seasons shocked fans all over the world. But years before, Cavill broke the hearts of his fans, the actor was asked about his own connection with the character that everyone ended up falling in love with.

Although Henry Cavill may have left the show, there was no denying that the actor felt a deep connection with the character he portrayed.

Henry Cavill opened up about his connection to Geralt of Rivia

Back in 2019, Henry Cavill sat down for an interview with Polygon. As this was just before The Witcher aired for the first time, there was a lot of buzz around both the actor and the series. So, as expected the interviewer asked him questions about his time as Geralt of Rivia and asked him if anything had felt familiarity or a connection towards the character. The now 40-year-old immediately responded with, “I really feel a connection to Geralt,” and specified that it was “his nature” that he connected with.

Henry Cavill, who is set to star in a romance film now, explained that his main connection would always be to the books by Andrzej Sapkowski. What he found the character and he had in common was the fact that they both try to always do the “right thing.” However, they are not afraid to step up and do some of the unsavory tasks that need to be done. He even confessed that Geralt felt very familiar to him “from the very beginning.”

But the connection between Henry Cavill and his character stemmed long before his love for the books or the games ever became a thing.

Apart from playing the character and even the games, Henry Cavill’s reason for the connection seems to be a whole lot deeper. During the same interview, he opened up about how he had developed certain traits that the character seemed to share. Although it was immediately put on his military upbringing, he also added that the way they both viewed politics was eerily similar and made him feel “an affiliation with the character.”

Henry Cavill ended the interview by saying that although the connection was there, it could have been due to the actor “having lived in the fantasy genre for so long.” But one thing has been clear: The star definitely did feel a spark for a while there. However, it was not strong enough to keep him on the series for more than 3 seasons.
