In the history of pop culture, few shows have stood the test of time and have come across as redefining as Friends. The NBC sitcom that aired for ten years touched every nook and cranny of the world thanks to a unique blend of comedy, sarcasm, and a story that kept evolving with time. From the late Matthew Perry’s iconic sarcasm-laden one-liners to Matt LeBlanc’s on-spot comic delivery, the show had its characters deeply rooted in its cast. Owing to its immense popularity, many guest stars graced the show’s stage. However, among them, Paul Rudd stands as one of those Friends guest stars who outlived his planned character arc.

While his extended stay in the show was due to fans’ love for him, Rudd always felt like he overstayed the welcome.

“Mike!” Joey Tribbiani yells out a shot in the dark for Phoebe Buffay’s blind date only to receive a perplexed response from one Mike Hannigan. The then 33-year-old debuted on the iconic show in Episode 3 of Season 9 and stayed all the way till its very end. But being a part of the finale did not feel natural to Paul Rudd. Speaking back in February 2023 on The Heart Breakfast with Jamie and Amanda, he summed up his experience of being a part of the tear-jerker two-part finale episode. “I’m getting, like, a front-row seat to things I’m not supposed to see,”

Appearing on the 2004 finale, The Last One, made him feel “privileged” yet “strange”. The culmination made sense for the group of the six core cast who huddled since 1994, he felt. “I just don’t want to sit back here and get in the way, he described his feelings. While the Ant-Man actor did appear in the finale, he was not part of the iconic concluding scene, which he described as being “all emotional.”

Soon after Friends ended in 2004, all the actors went in different directions with their lives. Among them, only Matt LeBlanc was the one who received his spin-off, Joey. Paul Rudd, on the other hand, started a further foray into mainstream Hollywood. The actor was a part of 2004’s Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy and 2005’s The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Additionally, he also starred in Reno 911! and Saturday Night Live.

One of Rudd’s biggest in-roads was with 2015’s Ant-Man for Marvel Studios. The role then led him to appear in subsequent comic-book movies including playing a pivotal role in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Interestingly, on the very show when asked if he was part of any Friends group chat, he declined. Although, he is part of one in the Marvel side.
