Reality is based on the life of a woman named Reality Winner, who was arrested under the charges of leaking confidential information. She is widely recognized as the NSA whistleblower who compromised information during the 2016 elections. The key rule Sweeney kept in mind while preparing for her role was, “I looked at Reality as a human being, and that’s how I kept my entire thought process throughout it.”

In the interview she gave to Looper, she revealed that she had no idea about Winner’s story. She got to know it when she went to audition for the film. This thing helped her to look at Winner without being judgemental. Sweeney saw it as a human, and that’s how she prepared for the role.
She also answered the host’s question about what drew her toward the role. Its rawness and the rollercoaster of emotions were something Sweeney wanted to challenge herself with. However, this is not the only thing that drew her towards Reality.

Tina Satter is the director of the film and she chose her play ‘Is This A Room’ to create Reality. Her play was based on the real transcripts of the FBI interrogation and so did the film’s script. The humanization of the experience of Miss Winner, which was said to be political, is something the cast and crew worked on.

Sweeney adeptly portrayed the intelligence and passion that drove Winner to expose what she believed to be important truths.
