“I like how he moves”- Henry Cavill Impresses a Weapons Expert by His Swordsmanship in ‘The Witcher’
There are multitudes of reasons why Jaskier’s ‘Toss A Coin To Your Witcher’ now holds the stature of a national anthem in the hearts of The Witcher fans. But perhaps the most obvious is its connection to Henry Cavill. Although composed by Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli, it is Henry Cavill who worked days and nights to make the lyrics about thrusting elves back on the shelf and wiping out every monster that breathed life into it.
A Superman of the Metropolis before he stepped in as the savior of the Continent, Cavill, had a challenging task at hand when he was asked to become Geralt. And with how The Witcher hashtag has turned into a mourning ground upon his exit, it is clear that he has put forth a commendable performance. But does an unbiased weapon expert think so too?

Throughout his books, Andrzej Sapkowski reiterates countless times how marvelous Geralt is with his sword. And not one to disrespect the source material, Henry Cavill took up actual training to learn how to wield his sword like a true warrior. To put his training to the test, Insider invited real weapon experts to rate Cavill’s fight scenes in The Witcher in 2020. One expert was thoroughly impressed by the actor’s movements as he said, “I like how he moves, I think he’s got a good organic feel to him.”
The fight scene that was shown to the expert was from the earlier days of The Witcher. In fact, it was the first fight from the pilot of the series titled The End.
Even though it was his first real fight sequence from the series, Cavill’s swordsmanship received good reviews. And given how the actor rose from the ranks of an actor to a fight coordinator in his last season, it is clear that he only got better.
But was Henry Cavill really the one slashing all the evils with his swords in The Witcher?

Unparalleled fighting skills and eyes that speak a hundred emotions formed the crux of Geralt. This was true in the case of Sapkowski’s description of his main character as well as Henry Cavill’s portrayal of him. Therefore, no matter how many more reps it took or how many cuts he got, the British actor pushed through in order to present the best Geralt without any stunt doubles. Even Lauren Schmidt Hissrich would testify for this.
This is not the same as Hugh Jackman sweating it in the gym before he makes his Wolverine return or Will Smith climbing Burj Khalifa to reach his weight loss goals because even the best of the best use stunt doubles when filming dangerous fight scenes. This is just a testament to just how huge the loss of Henry Cavill as Geralt is.
