"I had goosebumps"- New DCU Recruit Frank Grillo Gives an Early Review of 'Superman' After Seeing the Trailer
All eyes are on the 2025 Superman. Not only will it be the official kickoff for the new DCU, led by James Gunn, but it will also be the moment of truth to see if replacing Henry Cavill in the iconic role as the Last Son of Krypton was the right move. Back in 2013, Zack Snyder took a crack at giving Superman a fresh twist with Man of Steel, but that effort, to this day, remains highly divisive. However, from what it seems, James Gunn is ready to leave all those concerns behind, and he is already getting some early backing for the upcoming Superman.
Frank Grillo, who has just entered the DCU, has assured that James Gunn’s vision for the new universe is going to be a full-on spectacle.

During a recent interview with Collider’s Steve Weintraub, Frank Grillo could not help but spill some tidbits about his time on the set of Superman. He shared how excited he was to be a part of such a major production, and in a fun reveal, Grillo mentioned that he got a “sneak peek” of the Superman trailer- though he joked about hoping he would not get into trouble for spilling the beans. Despite that, Grillo admitted he was absolutely blown away by what he saw, saying, “my skin was hot and I had goosebumps”.
Grillo also had high praise for the new Superman, David Corenswet, despite the mixed reaction from fans. “This kid, David, is going to be a superstar,” predicted the 59-year-old. Grillo, who recently made the jump from the MCU- where he played Brock Rumlow/Crossbones- is now stepping into the DCU as Rick Flag Sr. in all its upcoming projects like Creature Commandos, Superman, and even Peacemaker Season 2.
After teasing Superman and Creature Commandos, Grillo shared how the experience of working in the DCU compared to his time in the MCU.
Frank Grillo may have hinted at a critique of the MCU
Frank Grillo recently chatted with Screen Rant about his role in Creature Commandos, where he was also asked about his experience transitioning from an MCU character to that of DCU. When discussing the most rewarding part of jumping between the studios, Grillo mentioned that in the DCU, he was involved in the creative process from the start “and not just used as plot device and then shunned away”.

This could have been a reference to how MCU sidelined his character, despite his key role in the Captain America franchise. Though Rick Flag Sr. may not be as well-known as Marvel’s Crossbones, it is quite clear that Grillo feels more valued and engaged in his new role in the DCU.
