The future James Bond has some big shoes to fill after Daniel Craig. We have several big contenders, a fierce race, and some invested fans. For one of the longest-running franchises, the pressure is only more to maintain its name and choose the perfect face. Amongst its top contenders are actors like Tom Hardy, Henry Cavill, Nicholas Hoult, and Idris Elba.

When we think of James Bond, we think of a tall and handsome man, who can swiftly jump from one tower to another, and fight crimes while maintaining his posh suit. Any actor would be privileged to represent such a well-respected character. But Idris Elba became the exception recently by showing his disinterest, and he has a solid reason behind it.

Inclusion vs skills has been the new debate when it comes to casting an actor who looks different from the ones who previously played an iconic role. Similar has been a problem for The Suicide Squad hero. He recently revealed to the hosts of SmartLess podcast how race became an issue for him when it came to James Bond. The British actor was initially excited to be considered as a contender by fans for such an important role.

According to him, there were those who did not like the idea because he said, “It became about nonsense, and I got the brunt of it.” He tossed out the idea of him playing the high-profile agent while being thankful for the consideration. The action hero has previously shown his ability to play the role through his work and his hunky features certainly fit into the description to play the British character.

James Bond has so far been played by some amazing actors, including Pierce Brosnan, Roger Moore, Daniel Craig, and Timothy Dalton. But 007 producer Barbara Broccoli revealed her wish to finally have a Bond of color. Inclusivity includes actors of different genders, casts, colors, and backgrounds, which helps to see the character differently.

However, Elba fears this exact kind of grouping. He feels that actors should be selected for merit, and not as a representation of inclusivity. He sees himself as an actor, and not a ‘black actor’. As producers narrow down on choices, Henry Cavill also remains a tough contender or at least a fan favorite who they believe can do anything.
