During an exclusive interview on the Smartless podcast with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, Simmons acknowledged, “I don’t get auto racing.” He also claimed that he tried to enjoy Formula One’s current rise but was unable to do so as he was perplexed by the circular racetracks. “Come to Formula One with me,” Arnett joked. Hayes followed the conversation by asking each of them an intriguing question about the psychology behind their profound love of sports.
After hearing the question, Bateman stated that the Olympics, which occur every four years and where athletes put all they have on the line and their lives on the line, heightened his passion for sports. Arnett spoke next, stating that his passion for soccer stems from his awareness of the tales and individuals linked with the sport. Simmons chimed in, saying it’s like your DNA, and your enthusiasm for anything has to hit before the age of six.
In the same conversation, Bateman confessed to his co-hosts and the audience that this was not the first time he and Simmons had worked together on a podcast.

In the same show, Bateman mentioned that he and Simmons had recorded a podcast during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the substance of that podcast became topical and did not age well. Simmons humorously responded, “I thought Bateman and the others didn’t like him, or maybe it was because he said something about Ozark back then.” Bateman then remarked that he tried to edit it and make it more entertaining, but could not make it work.
All the Smartless hosts then reassured Simmons in a fun tone that they adored him and were delighted that he could join them on the podcast. Notably, in the same interaction, the 54-year-old also shared how he built his career following his suspension from ESPN.
