"I couldn't afford HBO"- Cristin Milioti Talks Her Struggling Start to Fame Amidst 'The Penguin's Dream Reception
Ever since Cristin Milioti played the yellow-umbrella-toting, ukulele-strumming ‘mother’ in How I Met Your Mother, she has been a favorite among sitcom fans. But that was not where her career first took off. Milioti’s first acting job was the one that went unnoticed by many. Recently, as she stepped into yet another villainous role in HBO's The Penguin, she recalled the days when starring in an HBO show seemed completely out of reach for her.
Milioti shared how her acting journey began with a show that is often credited with launching the second Golden Age of Television.

In a recent interview with Jonathan Blomberg of MovieZine, Milioti opened up about her early acting days while promoting her latest HBO miniseries, The Penguin. During the conversation, she revealed that her first acting role was in the HBO crime drama The Sopranos. Milioti made an appearance in the show’s final season as Catherine Sacrimoni. Back then, she was not very familiar with The Sopranos because she did not have access to HBO. “I couldn't afford HBO, so I knew it was a big deal, but I hadn’t seen it,” the 39-year-old shared.
Milioti went on to explain that she was clueless about how things worked on set. Thankfully, the “incredibly kind” director, Steve Buscemi, helped her feel “safe,” even though she was a total unknown and an “itty bitty baby” in the industry. Looking back, it is remarkable how she went from not being able to afford HBO to starring in one of its major shows, The Penguin, alongside The Batman creator, Matt Reeves.
Matt Reeves recently teased a potential collaborator for the highly anticipated The Batman II, who has also played a role in The Penguin.

It is no secret that Matt Reeves is pulling together the team for the follow-up to his 2022 hit, The Batman. And he is eyeing a key player from the spin-off series, The Penguin, to join his crew. In an interview with Collider, the filmmaker expressed his hope for Greig Fraser to return as the cinematographer for The Batman 2, calling him “the best” to work with.
Reeves went on to explain how Fraser had been deeply involved in The Penguin series. Their collaboration on the HBO show gave the creators even more room to fine-tune the vibe of Gotham City. And, now it is to be seen whether Cristin Milioti’s Sofia Falcone will also make it to the much-anticipated sequel of The Batman.
