Hugh Jackman Finally Moves Past His 25-Year-Old Complaint About Wolverine’s Treatment, Credits Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds for a Surprising Detail

One reason why Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine will always be one of the all-time best superhero movie performances is his loyalty to the character. The actor had many reasons to give up on Wolverine from the moment Bryan Singer had briefly left X-Men. Despite three movies that received either dismal or lukewarm reviews and having enough star power in the industry to leave Wolverine behind for good, Jackman kept it as tightly clawed as possible, never treating the role as something beneath him.

Over the years, the Wolverine universe in the franchise saw a massive transition, positively. However, it still took Jackman 25 years to finally get the character right. And the actor credits it to his best friends, Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy.

The camaraderie between Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and Shawn Levy is widely celebrated in the industry. And often, such close-knit relationships yield the most inspired creative outcomes. In an interview with Vanity Fair, the Logan star shared how he always found Wolverine “written very sparsely” in his previous roles.  And it was his “comically brilliant” co-star and director, who "cared about this character" as much as Jackman did that helped him unveil a new side of Wolverine in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine

In Deadpool & Wolverine, for the first time, the actor from Kate & Leopold did not have to ad-lib his character. Reynolds and Levy actually sat down and ensured that Jackman was on the same page at every turn. "Everything felt new and fresh to me," said the 55-year-old. And he did not just mean the character but also the rejuvenating experience he gained from working with his two best friends for the first time. And these emotions have been flowing from both sides.

Not just for Ryan Reynolds, but the Hollywood strikes cast a dark shadow over everyone involved. The timing was particularly unfortunate for stakeholders of Deadpool’s third installment, as its production had come to a halt. During this period, Reynolds found himself improvising an “elevator scene” without a script, due to the absence of writers. He told Empire Magazine that right after shooting the scene, he knew it was not his best and wished he could have done it better.

With regret, he confided in Hugh Jackman, sharing, “God, I wish I had another crack at that elevator scene”. Being the best friend he is, Jackman wasted no time in arranging for the reshoot of the scene. “I’ll never forget that,” said the Free Guy star. With these behind-the-scenes insights from both actors, it is clear they have leveraged their enduring friendship in the best way possible to bring Deadpool & Wolverine to life, justifying the movie's theme both on and off-screen.
