The NBC 90s sitcom, Friends, might have a huge fan following. However, the show ran into a few problems years after it completed its 10 seasons. From the problematic behavior of the characters on the show to some alleged politically incorrect jokes about the LGBTQ community, fans began picking the series apart. Thankfully, Sir Richard Branson, an equality activist and a guest star on the show, ended up setting the record straight.
Nearly 15 years after Friends came to an end, the media mogul chose to come forward and defend the beloved show against the harsh accusations it was facing.

Back in 2019, Friends was under fire after people had labeled the show as homophobic and transphobic. While not everyone agreed with the criticism, not a lot of people had spoken out. That was when Sir Richard Branson shared his thoughts on the whole situation. In an interview with the Daily Mail, the now 73-year-old stated that in that day and age, a lot of shows would tread a thin line when it came to the LGBTQ community.

He also added, “Obviously future sitcoms or films must portray things differently.” While he believed that all the jokes might not have been in the best taste, the businessman stood true to his belief that Friends was not against the LGBTQ community like so many people had suspected. After all, he did get to spend some quality time with the cast when he made a cameo on the series.
20 years before the world turned on Friends for their controversial jokes, Branson had shocked fans of the show with a rare acting gig.

In 1998, Friends came out with its fourth season. From hilarious moments with Jennifer Aniston’s Rachel Green and Courteney Cox’s Monica Geller to a trip to London for Ross’ wedding to Emily, the season had something for everybody. In episode 23, The One With Ross’ Wedding Part 1, when Matt LeBlanc’s Joey and Matthew Perry’s Chandler were sightseeing, they bumped into Sir Richard Branson, who acted as a street vendor.
While his cameo surprised everyone, it was not the highlight of the episode. Aniston’s character realization that her feelings for David Schwimmer’s character had not been resolved took all the limelight. Unfortunately, that only led to Ross saying the wrong name as he said his vows.
